The IHI Newsletter Halal News for
May is available. This month's newsletter discusses the possibility of reducing direct Shari'ah
board review of common transactions and relying on disclosure and occasional Shari'ah audits to provide Shari'ah scholars with more time
to focus on new products and larger transactions that require greater Shari'ah review.

Two recent papers, one by Sheikh Yusuf DeLorenzo and one by Sheikh Taqi Usmani, two prominent Shari'ah scholars, describe the Shari'ah implications
of products developed to replicate conventional products. The two papers are now publicly available, the latter having been translated into English
by Sheikh DeLorenzo, and included on our "Articles" page.

Dr. Ehsan Feroz, Blake Goud and Mohammad Rahman, the Special Advisor on Microfinance, Executive Director, and
Chairman of the Institute of Halal Investing will present our paper, "The Development and Implementation of a
Shari'ah-based Microfinance Using the Grameen Group Methodology," at a pre-Forum workshop (PDF schedule)
at Harvard University on April 18, 2008, the day before the beginning of the biannual
Forum on Islamic Finance (PDF Schedule).

February is available. This month's newsletter focuses on the need for greater
knowledge about Islamic finance by non-Muslims to facilitate the industry's growth in countries which are not majority Muslim.

The IHI Newsletter Halal News for January 2008 is available (Issue 1, Volume 12).
This month's newsletter includes a summary of the previous year for the Institute of Halal Investing as well as a preview of our Shari'ah-based microfinance model.
A paper describing the microfinance model will be presented at a pre-forum workshop before the 8th Annual Forum on Islamic Finance (on April 18, 2008) at Harvard University.

December is available. This month's newsletter focuses on the recent news that AAOIFI will reconsider
the Shari'ah-compliance of sukuk that include repurchase agreements, an upcoming sukuk issue by a U.S. company and the
U.K. Financial Services Authority's recent paper on its treatment of applications by Islamic banks to operate in the country.

The Institute of Halal Investing received it's determination letter from the U.S. Internal
Revenue Service giving the Institute tax-exempt status as a 501(c)(3) organization. It
also means that contributions made to the Institute are tax deductible in the U.S.

A new paper has been added to the "Articles" page. The paper,
written by Dr. Mohammed Obaidullah, currently the Secretary General of the International Association
for Islamic Economics (IAIE) is titled "Islam, Poverty and Micro Finance 'Best Practices'".

The IHI Newsletter Halal News
for November is now
available.
This month's issue focuses on the requirements within Islamic
finance to support futher growth, particularly relating to increasing
understanding and communication. There is also an article about
how Shari'ah boards should be set up (individual financial institutions,
nationally or supranationally).

's 2007 Tour. It will

New Column
The IHI mission to demystify Islamic finance requires the creation of a
dialogue which requires outside voices with diverse opinions on Islamic
finance. In an attempt to support this dialogue, the Institute of Halal
Investing is adding an opinion column. Anyone wishing to comment on
the newsletter or other topics in Islamic finance, banking, investing and
economics should email them to newsletter@investhalal.org.
Submissions may be edited for length or clarity.
